Spinal cord damage often has life-altering consequences

There are large numbers of people in Texas and other states who have suffered spinal injuries and have to deal with the consequences. Car accidents often cause spinal cord damage for victims. Other common causes include falls, sports injuries and even gunshot wounds. Certain diseases may also cause injuries to the spine, such as Polio and Spina Bifida.

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that connects to the brain from where functions such as movement are controlled. It is encased in the spinal column, which consists of a number of vertebrae. The severity of injuries depends on the level of damage that was caused by the incident. Some victims suffer damage to the vertebrae, which can cause extended periods of pain. If the spinal cord is damaged, the victim may suffer paralysis.

The spinal cord injury of every patient is unique, and recovery often requires long periods of hospitalization and rehabilitation. Depending on the type of damage, the injuries may lead to paraplegia or quadriplegia. Victims may have to relearn basic functions, such as speaking and eating. In addition, he or she will have to adjust to life in a wheelchair, and facilities at home will have to be altered to accommodate a wheelchair. Some cases will necessitate the need for a full-time professional caregiver.

The financial impact of an accident that causes spinal cord damage is typically astronomical. Victims in Texas may find comfort in knowing that experienced personal injury attorneys will be able to assist in pursuing personal injury claims against any parties deemed responsible. A successfully presented claim in a civil court setting may lead to a monetary judgment for past and future medical expenses and other losses sustained as the result of an accident caused by the negligence of another.
