Motor scooter accident: rider hospitalized after Dallas hit-and-run

Dallas police are currently searching for a driver who was recently involved in a hit-and-run accident. The collision took place at approximately 10 a.m. on May 23. Witnesses reported seeing a white four-door sedan speeding. According to several people on the scene, the car struck a motor scooter at full force, causing the rider to flip off the vehicle.

The auto accident happened in downtown Dallas, with the motor scooter eastbound on Main Street and the sedan northbound on Lamar Street. Witnesses say the scooter driver had a green light, and the sedan driver had a red light. After the sedan ran the red light and slammed into the other motorist, the car continued on without stopping. One witness on a bicycle nearby said the car even accelerated to get away from the scene.

"It was pretty horrific," said the witness. "As someone who rides on two wheels, I hate to see that sort of thing."

Bystanders immediately tried to help the motor scooter rider, who was subsequently taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries and when he may be released were not disclosed in a news report.

Police interviewed witnesses hoping that someone saw the sedan's license plate.

Sadly, this hit-and-run occurred only one day after another fatal accident in Dallas involving a two-wheeled vehicle. In the previous day's accident, an SUV crashed into a motorcycle near the Dallas Farmers Market. The collision happened on Canton Street near the Pearl Expressway. In this instance also, the driver of the larger vehicle drove away from the scene without offering assistance.

These accidents underscore some of the dangers faced by drivers of two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles, bicycles and scooters. But drivers of larger vehicles have an obligation to share the road. When they don't, too often serious injuries occur, and victims should know their rights under Texas' personal injury laws.
