Josh received his J.D. from The University of Tulsa School of Law in 2007, where he became a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. While at Tulsa Law, Josh represented Tulsa in the Regional Negotiation Competition in 2006 and Regional ATLA Trial Competition in 2007.

Josh began his academic career at Wichita State University after accepting a baseball scholarship from the top ranked Shockers. That year Josh was a member of the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Championship team and went on to play in the Championship game of the Minnesota Regional. While at Wichita State Josh was a two time honor roll student. The following year Josh transferred to New Mexico Jr. College to play for his father Ray Birmingham. That year Josh was a part of a number one nationally ranked team before falling in the regional tournament to the eventual national champion. Josh was named to the honor roll during both semesters and was selected as an all-conference shortstop. After graduating with an associate’s degree from New Mexico Jr. College, Josh accepted a scholarship from the number one ranked University of Nebraska. While at Nebraska Josh was a member of the 2002 College World Series team and won a Big XII Championship in 2003. Josh was member of the honor roll every semester at Nebraska and was selected to the Big XII Academic All-Conference team in 2003 for his efforts on the field and in the classroom. In 2004, he graduated with his B.S. in Economics from the University of Nebraska.
